This story is all of the cliches and then a few extra scoops of nonsense for good measure, all shoved into a contrived plot with terrible pacing. I can tell the translators worked hard, but there is no saving this story.
Open the spoiler to read the full rant~!
The author and artist both paid no attention to continuity. I especially loved how the characters all happened to be wearing the exact same clothes before and after a 4 year time skip. The child only exists as a plot device with the same cookie cutter personality as you would find in most ‘Runaway (Pregnant) Wife’ stories. The rich CEO father/husband is stereotypical to a T and the author doesn’t even bother to develop his motivations. His grandfather is only around to act as the evil mother in law who preemptively beats the mandarin ducks by introducing their preferred villain love rival.
There are so many betrayals and convenient passerbys with cameras that it almost turns the genre into a satire or parody. Every villain has to be shocked and surprised anew at the relationship between the protagonists and their son, despite everything being revealed in public to the first villain to step forward. ML even signs his son up for kindergarten and takes him to a large banquet. Every character is so impatient to put up a fuss even if it’s their first time meeting the protagonist (s). Sometimes it’s even an entire family who runs up to be face slapped by President Gu.
The biggest loser from the continuity issues would be the male lead. The author can’t decide for their first night if he stumbled into her room on accident while drunk or whether he was also drugged against his will. Why or how did he leave the room before the large group arrived to catch the ‘cheating’ couple? How were their such clear photos of his face without anyone recognizing him??? He sleeps with a drugged woman while inebriated, doesn’t do any follow-up (showing he doesn’t really care much about this incident), remains abstinent (implied) for the next 4 years, and then he instantly falls for the mother of his son? Let’s not mention how he claims he will not touch her unless she agrees on one hand and endlessly harasses her despite her vocal resistance on the other. I call BS on this mix of overbearing CEO character traits the author calls a male lead. Contradictions can deepen a character’s depth, but only on the presumption that the flaws are not just neglectful mistakes by the author. There are many more examples, but I don’t want to spoil it too much. Regardless to say, the author’s mishandling of this character leaves him barely more than a pushy rapist that happens to be hella rich.
One thing that happens later drags the story down even more. MC supposedly has a hereditary illness triggered by pregnancy that affects her brain. The author claims this to be a ‘tumor’ that only effects women of her family. At least try to pass it off as the temporary swelling of a few important glands in the endocrine system or something. The biggest glaring issue can’t be forgotten: why wasn’t this an issue when she had her son?????????????
The one thing I may have liked about this story is that the person she slept with wasn’t her husband. In fact, her husband and his mistress’ family are the ones that drugged her. I don’t even want to get into the topic of how her ex husband/his family could have gotten her company shares in literally any other way. Does it even make sense to try to set up a plan to take them as Alimony? Ex continuingly entangles her once she returns to the country. He even uses her dead father to continue to morally kidnap the MC to get her to act how he wants. He doesn’t explain anything to his new wife and let’s her run out and bite at the MC like a rabid dog. It’s as if he kept the protagonists photo in his desk drawer specifically to provoke his wife, since it’s clear he isn’t capable of having real feelings for anyone. He appreciates his ex wife’s looks, but avoided touching her. Everyone is a tool or asset to him.
So many of the characters can’t see other characters as more than convenient objects. The villains are all somewhat delusional and caught up in their personal power fantasies to the point I’m not sure how they function as human beings. Don’t bother to try and sort out their motivations, because the author doesn’t.
Last question, what tf is up with the various royal families? One minute they are foreign. The next they are local (presumably to Huaxia) and competing with other foreign royalty and their secret agents, somehow dragging the main cast into their sh*t show.
Bah, read this if you are in the mood for some hot garbage. This trainwreck story is best enjoyed as a satire of the ‘runaway wife’ genré. It’s pretty good as a comedy if you read it from that angle at least.
