One Poker has been concluded, with Kaiji emerging victorious and claiming the 2.4 billion yen prize. But a new problem arises soon after: how can the Asian Trio take it with them and escape from Kazuya's Black Suits gathered right outside the entrance of the warehouse?

Japan, 1995. After graduating from high school, Itou Kaiji moves to Tokyo to get a job, but fails to find steady employment because the country is mired in its first recession since World War II. Depressed, he festers in his apartment, wasting the day away with cheap pranks, gambles, liquor and cigarettes.... more>>

This goes on for two years until he's paid an unexpected visit by a man named Endou, who wants to collect an outstanding debt owed to him in Kaiji's name. Endou gives Kaiji two options: either spend ten years repaying the money, or board the gambling ship Espoir (French for "hope" ), and stand a chance to clear the debt in one night. Using a con, Endou pressures Kaiji into accepting the latter option, believing he will never return alive.

Akagi runs from a game of chicken where he almost died, to a Mahjong parlour where a man loses all his money to the yakuza. When the police come to check on the place to see if the kid that ran from the game of chicken is there the yakuza deny that Akagi was involved. In the end the policeman invites Akagi to a much more organized Mahjong game and from there, the legend of the Genius who Fell into Darkness continues to grow. <<less

Kaiji decides to wager his earnings in an underground dice game for a ticket to get out of the mine for a limited period of time. But even if he surfaces, he only has one chance to win it big: by challenging the unbeatable pachinko machine nicknamed "The Bog."
