My first impression of this manga isn't very favourable. I may have dropped it if I hadn't already read the novel.

I can understand why the adaption struggles so much. The first arc would be bogged down if you try to include every detail. However, if you try to shorten the first game it becomes silly and nonsensical. The first arc is meant to be thrilling supernatural murder mystery disguised as a romance game. Everything from the the name to the premise is a trap.

This story is recommended for people who enjoy seeing a protagonist overcome extreme adversity while solving mysteries and completing quests. The protagonist almost always starts a game with limited information. He must search for it himself, dying quite often in the process. The multiple enthusiastic 'love interests' create many problems for Xie Xi, but they are also his greatest support.

These 'games' exist for reasons more profound than those initially presented.

      Spoiler

A great calamity is looming over the 'central government' of their galaxy due to a distinct lack of creative designing talent. God X used an extreme method to split his soul and embed them within his creations in order to compensate for his own lack of talent. He knew it was a gamble, but even he didn't expect his souls to reject others from entering. This means the worlds he designs can never be 'complete'. He still continued to make more worlds in an attempt to outpace the galaxy's slow but certain collapse.

      If I remember correctly

      Spoiler

Xie Xi may exist solely for Jiang Xie. I don't recall the specifics, but I think there were a predictions made before the start of the story when JX was looking for a solution (other than, yanno, blindly splitting his soul to support the Galaxy). It is certain that Jiang Xie has been waiting for XX to appear for a very long time. It seems shocking how fast God X becomes enthralled by him, but it's almost inevitable for X's soul to fall in love with his literal soul mate. Xie Xi doesn't have the same forewarning and is much younger. It's just as natural for him to resent the 'pervert' ML who came on way too strong.

      [collapse]
That is why Xie Xi will be continually forced to match up with someone he can only view as a 'psychopath'.

The Shura Field situation from the first arc is not going to be unique. The comedy of an otherwise upright hikkimori suddenly forced to play the role of a scum playboy will reappear. His affection for God X will hit new all time lows. What saves this story are the memorable game worlds riddled with complex puzzles. The extent of the clues that need unravelled in both the social relationships and the settings themselves are some of the best in the 'horror stream unlimited flow' genre. Eventually you come to realize that the first game where he died many times was actually 'easy' compared to the later arcs.

It's too bad that the pacing and art of the manga don't ever seem to hit the same sweet spot as the novel. They enhanced the comedic and strange aspects (God X is undeniably a weirdo, but he should be a powerful and interesting weirdo. The competence of his soul shards in the first world are not really seen or felt in this adaption.) to the extent that it becomes very hard to immerse in the mysteries. At least it's easy to immerse in the mc's resistance and initial dislike of the ML~! Yay~? ≫_>
